Receiving an acupuncture treatment

ACUPUNCTURE

HAVE YOU HAD IT BEFORE?

You might fall asleep. You might get the best thinking time of your week. Feel like you're floating, or feel like you're stuck to the table.

The world might look a little different afterward. Or you might not feel much at all - like going for a run that kind of sucked but you were still glad you did it.

But over time, things shift. Pain gets more manageable. Sleep gets easier. Your body starts sorting out the stuff that wasn't working. Is this your first time? We’ll guide you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your First Visit (approximately 75 minutes)

We start by chatting. What brought you in, what's going on, what you've tried. Then we do a treatment. We'll tell you what we're doing as we go, if that works for you of course. You'll rest with needles for 20-30 minutes. We’ll maybe do some cupping, gua sha, recommend some herbs if your situation warrants it, and then talk about an ongoing plan.

Follow-Up Visits

Check in, treatment, rest, plan next steps. Each visit builds on the last one.

Treatment Timeline

We typically start weekly. Once you're feeling better, we figure out what makes sense - every other week, monthly, or staying weekly if that works for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Acupuncture is an ancient healing practice that has been used for thousands of years. Acupuncture involves the insertion of thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body, believed to be connected to the body's energy pathways, or meridians. By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to restore balance and promote the body's natural healing ability. This holistic approach not only treats physical symptoms but also addresses the underlying imbalances that may be contributing to the person's health issues. Acupuncture has been shown to effectively treat a wide range of conditions.

  • This depends on what you're dealing with and how long you've had it. We typically start with at least weekly visits, and some people prefer coming more frequently for faster progress. Others do well with the weekly pace and love the consistent support. Once you're feeling better, most people find their optimal maintenance rhythm is somewhere between every other week to monthly. Some prefer to stay weekly because they love the consistent support. We'll start with what makes sense for your situation and adjust from there based on how you respond.

  • The needles we use are hair-thin—much smaller than injection needles. Most people are surprised by how gentle and relaxing acupuncture feels. You might feel a brief pinch when the needle goes in, followed by a dull, heavy sensation that means it's working. Many people fall asleep during treatment.

  • We'll start with a conversation about what brought you in and your overall health. Then we'll explain what we're doing as we go—no mysterious processes. You'll rest comfortably with needles for 20-30 minutes. Most people leave feeling calmer and more grounded, and many sleep better that night.

  • We treat a wide range of conditions. Check out our pages for chronic pain, mental health and anxiety, headaches and migraines, sleep issues, women's health, digestive problems, and neck and shoulder pain. If you don't see your concern listed, book a free consultation and we'll talk through whether acupuncture is a good fit.

  • Acupuncture helps regulate your nervous system, reduce inflammation, and improve circulation. When your body is stuck in chronic stress or pain patterns, acupuncture helps reset these systems so your body can heal naturally. It's not mystical—it's medicine that works with your body's existing healing mechanisms.

  • Yes, when performed by licensed acupuncturists. We use single-use, sterile needles and follow strict safety protocols. Side effects are rare and typically mild—you might feel relaxed or slightly tired after treatment.

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that can be easily rolled up to access your arms and legs. We provide gowns when needed, and we always respect your comfort level with clothing adjustments.

  • We focus on practical, effective treatment without any mystical language. Most of our patients are busy professionals who use acupuncture as regular maintenance—like going to the gym or meditating. We're direct about what to expect, realistic about timelines, and honest about what acupuncture can and can't do.

  • Absolutely. Acupuncture works well alongside physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage, medication, and therapy. We regularly coordinate with other providers and often find that acupuncture helps your other treatments work better.

  • Some people notice changes immediately, others see gradual improvements over several sessions. Chronic conditions took time to develop, so they often take time to resolve. We'll track your progress closely and adjust our approach if needed. Most people start to see patterns of improvement within the first month of consistent treatment.

  • We accept most United Healthcare plans and offer out-of-network benefits support for other insurance companies. Many insurance plans now cover acupuncture for various conditions. Learn more about insurance →

  • While acupuncture helps most people, it's not right for everyone. We'll have honest conversations about your progress and adjust our approach as needed. If we don't think we're the right fit, we'll help you find other resources that might be more helpful.

  • Private acupuncture offers one-on-one care in a private room with fully customized treatment plans. We can incorporate additional modalities like cupping, moxa, gua sha, and trigger point work based on your needs. Private sessions are best for complex or chronic conditions, or when you want personalized attention and longer treatment time. Community acupuncture (Denver only) is acupuncture in a group setting—multiple recliners in one quiet room. It focuses on pure acupuncture treatment without additional modalities, making it more affordable for consistent weekly care. Community is perfect for maintenance, general wellness, and straightforward conditions. Many patients do both—community for regular maintenance and private when they need deeper work.
